Price Master Details

Price Master includes many features. These include data libraries, full menu system, integrated help, statistics, graphical presentation, data validation, password security and fast automated checking facilities. These facilities make the user’s job easier. A trained user can easily price and get full statistics for up to 200 isometric drawings per eight hour day with the help of a data typist. The checking of input data, which is very important, is possible in several areas by using graphical presentation and exception reporting of the entered data. The same applies to the calculated results

Estimating and project handling have often different requirements. Estimating has to be fast and reasonably accurate. During the project handling the user has normally more time but the invoices have to be exact. These requirements are often in conflict. Therefore Price Master has separately optimized systems for speed and accuracy. Depending on your requirements you can choose one or the other. Typical example is pricing of painting of pipes. Price Master has possibility to calculate painting cost using square meter price or individual item rates. First method requires one rate entry but the second hundreds of rates. Accuracy of the square meter pricing is better than 5%, which is acceptable for most estimates but not for unit rate invoicing. To enter one rate takes few seconds but to enter hundreds can take hours. Actual calculation time in both cases is well under a minute even on a very large project.

Program is really easy to use. Firstly you study your project, collect all the drawings and standards. From these documents you can decide how to set up the Price Master tender. You decide how to divide your take offs. More details mean more work but also more meaningful results. You can divide the entries based on "Areas" (physical or imaginary plant areas), Line numbers and Drawings. It is possible to enter all your take offs using one DRWG, Line number and Area, but it is not advisable.

The next step is to find the line classes for the project. Some clients make this work easy by standardizing all their piping. If you are not so lucky, you can create your own. This is not difficult but needs some minor planning. The line class is important because it is used by the program during the calculations to establish wall thickness and material.

Lastly before you start entering take offs is to create your short codes for your take off items. Here your creativity can really work. Typically your take off includes pipes, welds, fittings, valves etc. You can enter these items into the program as "P", "PIPE", "pipe", "P500NBCS_BlackPlain", "9900879" or whatever you prefer. It is best to use "the easy to remember short codes" where possible. The reason is that this increases the data input speed.

After all this setting-up you are ready to go and enter your take off. This part of the work is the one most of us hate. Typing. However, Price Master minimizes the actual typing. Most of the information can be selected from drop down menus. Admittedly using drop downs is slower than a fast professional typist but the choice is yours. You can do it both ways.

To speed up your input even more you can create Libraries for items, line classes, materials, prices etc. You never need to enter the same information twice. You can even use any existing tender as your starting point but more common is to export reusable information from your tenders to libraries.

A library is simply a tender without a take off. You can have unlimited number of libraries. Typically you would have one library for each of your main customers who have standardized their piping and two of your own. One library for jobs where you don’t supply material and one for those where you do supply. Differentiation between material and non material contracts is worthwhile. In one case you need to supply possibly thousands of different items. To price erection you need maybe less than twenty item codes e.g. erection pricing does not need to differentiate between API 5L Gr B and ASTM A106 Gr B but material purchasing has to.

After you have entered your information, the real fun starts. You select a menu option and few seconds later you have the factors, erection hours, manpower requirements and cost, material cost etc. What if you are asked to calculate the total mass of pipes, cost of NDT and PWHT, number of butt welds per pipe size and wall thickness by the next morning? Normally it would mean guessing or hard work through the night. Not with Price Master. All this is ready and you can print it immediately.

To prevent any confusion, about which is the latest calculation, each report has time and date printed to show the revision status. All reports are available in CSV, TXT and HTML formats ready for sending to managers or clients or inclusion on company Intranet.

You don’t believe in standard factors. You have your own ideas. No problem. In Price Master you can adjust standard factors for each item, line, size and material individually. Normally you don’t have any handling factors for a flange. With Price Master you can include 50% of the two ended fitting handling or any other portion you prefer. Similarly if you believe that your company is performing badly on nominal bores under NB 50 you can adjust all items under NB 50 in one place. Maybe you have one line, which is very difficult to erect. Just increase the factors for that line. Finally because there are people who calculate one factor for one hour and those who use a performance factor and change one factor to 1.3 hours (or any other number) Price Master has an overall performance factor. You can set your own hourly rate per calculated factor.

You can easily import and export information into various formats. Typical use is your erection planning. Most well known scheduling programs can import information. From Price Master you get the tasks, durations and resource allocations. In your scheduling package you need to link the tasks and your plan is ready.

Price Master has about 80 basic forms and more than 40 reports. Many of these are used for multiple purposes and therefore for the user numbers are much higher.

Program is fully customizable and it is possible to link it into existing systems including your design packages.

More Information

Price Master has large User's Manual which you can download. It has screen shots of all main forms and it gives detailed information about the program and pricing principles.
